to carolmoore.net SAMPLE CAROL MOORE COLLAGES I
spend so much time fighting the state online and in the flesh, that I
don't have enough time for my various artistic pursuits. (See Songs and Videos. I'm also a
dramatist and musical comedy writer.) Check out these two collages I
made in 1968. See 2005 analysis of two below. In
the meantime you can get my current
mini-collages in button form at http://radicalbuttons.com
Or take a plunge, come up with a theme, send me $200.00 and I'll
make you your own collage... I've got lots of photo clippings ready to
go!
INTO
THE FUTURE - 1968
© carol moore 1968 ![]() t This collage should be "read" from the bottom right to the top left. It is a history of humanity's struggles for love, individuality and freedom from violence, authority and homogenization. GREAT EXPECTATIONS - A FEMINIST COLLAGE 1968 © carol moore 1968 ![]() 2005 ANALYSIS OF MY “GREAT EXPECTATIONS - A FEMINIST COLLAGE” (for a feminist conference) I made this collage in the summer of 1968 – during the run up to the Democratic and Republican conventions -- when I was 20 years old and going into my junior year in college. In my first 18 years I was angry at males for denigration of females – and me. After letting a lot of rage out my freshman year in college, I was ready to “get on” with my life and was developing my own Great Expectations regarding writing and politics - I was still a moderate Democrat. Yet I felt fears and ambivalence as well just before the modern feminist movement exploded into consciousness. How to “Read” this Collage This is “read” from the center out, from top left and down. It includes a number of examples of “Great Expectations” realized - or crushed. There are a number of 1960s political in-jokes. How much of the symbolism I describe below was conscious and how much unconscious I do not remember. Descriptions and Explanations ** Center photo I believe is Russian Boris Pasternak, author of Doctor Zhivago. He symbolizes oppression of governments - and writers who get famous writing about it. Dividing his photo is one of a young woman trying to be young and free – with a male child pulling on her hem – and keeping her back. ** Top left – the anarchist breaking free **“ Writes far more words than any other” expresses my writing ambitions. The worried/annoyed bull and the matador twice below them probably express my fear of failure. My successes remain modest. ** Young hip 60s females like I wanted to be! ** Double photo of Alec Guiness who played in the 1946 version of “Great Expectations.”(I had a crush on him that summer!) ** Early Vietnam themes include photo of President Johnson, Defense Secretary McNamara and Secretary of State Rusk and an American G.I. ** Kid who aspires to have a mustache; bird who aspires to eat a hippo ** Girl who aspires for only love, fun and boys next to photos of the famous Albert Schweitzer, republican George Romney who was challenging Nixon for the Republican nomination and Mao Tse Tung. Probably was expressing my own desire to “have it all.” ** Captured American spy John Birch believed the US would nuke the Chinese communists to save him; they executed him. ** African natives hold a photo of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie. ** The “sex worker” tries to attract a client ** ”With the Wind/With Fidel” - I was a big Gone with Wind/Clark Gable fan and also enjoyed the concept of a female confronting a top honcho like Fidel Castro. ** Obviously a pregnant male joke. ** Female beauty and the male beast?? ** Hamsters symbolize cuddly love ** Spaghetti wasted falling through the seive, symbol of too many female lives?. ** Photos of successes Alec Guiness and Dylan Thomas -- and a forlorn lass. ** Top right - That’s Israeli leader David Ben Gurion who I considered a big hero, being at the time very pro-Israel. Below a cartoon of a wash woman of the lowliest status, a fate so many women fear. Notice the photo of Israeli General Dayan. I used to admire Israeli warmongers but have evolved since then! ** A Brit boasting about the fallen empire’s financial stability and a rich male being taken to jail. Symbolizing how the mighty fall! |
